Time to meet the teams!

Avid Baldwin Cup watchers will know this, but we have a tradition of interviewing all of our sailors each year, all 96 in all. Some regattas would focus on their stellar and otherwise world class racing resumes. We on the other hand, know that’s what other more straitlaced publications are for. We instead seek to reveal what’s behind that highly competitive sailor’s spirit: a sly wit and rivalry.

By the time the regatta kicks off we’ll have profiled every team. Starting things off this year are former Baldwin Cup Champions and NY rivals, New York Yacht Club and Larchmont Yacht Club.

New York Yacht Club

Starting us off Team Captain Joy MacDougall on the NYYC team:

CA veterans – Derby and Garrett

Fans of the event – Dan, Laura Litchfield

From Newport Harbor – Scott Hogan

Usual Suspects (Organizers) – Joy MacDougall and Pete Levesque

How have you trained for this regatta? A strict diet of Eggo waffles and miracle whip in the morning. A raw egg in an MGD with some Tabasco after flipping tractor tires up a 2 mile hill. Then cool down with some Mario Cart while getting a Thai foot eating fish massage.

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? I like to spear fish the local area. It puts fear into the other competitors and gives me a good sense of the currents.

Favorite Baldwin Cup moment? When local lore rang true. The stormy night when Duff the harbor monster surfaced and gave me back the spear gun I’d lost. He wasn’t the least bit angry with me trying to make a meal out of him. Actually a great sport about the whole thing. When he was buried in the mud I thought he was a yellowfin croaker. My mistake! When I hit him with the spear he swam an jerked the gun from my hands. I thought it was gone forever. Thing was sweet too. Carbon body, neutrally buoyant, perfectly balanced. It’s great to have it back. Duff and I actually shared a Dark and Stormy recapping the episode.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Jah

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Duff.

And what’s your sailing background? Started out on the calm waters of manchester-by-the-sea. Then Zack Leonard taught me everything I will ever need to know.

How have you trained for this regatta? I googled “harbor 20 sailing” and found this on the class website:

STABILITY & SINGLEHANDED EASE…All lines are set up to lead to the cockpit so that one person can handle everything. The furling jib is self tacking and self vanging…The Harbor 20 can handle a crowd comfortably – but it can also be a very satisfying single hander, so you don’t have to line up crew for what should be the simple matter of “going sailing.” These features are incorporated in one design class which is ideal for yacht club use because the need for skilled crew (or any crew) will be minimized.

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen.

What makes a good team racer teammate? Anyone who is willing to sail on a team with Cardwell and Danny is a true American hero.

Says the woman sailing with Clay! Speaking of, hardest part of Team Racing? Well at the Baldwin it is definitely going to be keeping track of that fourth boat.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? KLAUS. That is all.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? If anyone is beating us, Clay will show them his feet…proven to be more effective in stopping the opposition than any fancy team racing moves.

So there you have it, the first installment of Meet Your Baldwin Cup Sailors! Watch this space because with 10 teams to go, we have much more to come!!
