Crew William H. “Carpet Bagger” Gammell

William H Gammell
Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Potowomut, Rhode Island and Hobart College Sailing Social Events Team

What did you learn to sail in? The Ocean…..I grew up sailing on my family’s 32′ 1950s sloop on Narragansett bay. I then proceeded to spend summers sailing at Greenwich Bay sailing Association in Dyer Dows, Optimists, 420s, and Lasers. But what made me fall in love with the sea were those afternoons spent knocking around the river in an old sunfish, and a year sailing around the world on a 190′ tallship. Go ClassAfloat!

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Visualizing the Victory formation.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
Fight song:

John A too bad to be penalized by the judges

Theme Song:

Can’t you hear us knocking on the trophy room door!

Sail with a significant other? Significant other, who needs one of those?

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing?
Hardest: Keeping the southern sailors in their cages.

Favorite: Letting the southern sailors out of their cages.

Favorite: The tough competition and wonderful camaraderie.

How have you trained for this regatta? I have been practicing my sunset viewing. A lot of serious CrossFit training, we all know how tough these boats are to sail, just brutal on the body.

In all seriousness I sailed a few Star class events this winter, and umpired a team race to up my tactical and rules game.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? The ones I make at this, my first, Baldwin Cup.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? St Francis, those traitorous dogs Jackson Benvenutti and Tyler Baeder infiltrated our organizations and have shared our secrets to success amongst those damn comers. They will rue the day they turned their back on the live oaks of their homeland!

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because SYC instituted a new rule where if we don’t place at regattas we are financially sanctioned and are not allowed in to the bar for the following month.
