Here come the Bulldogs: Yale

As racing begins today, we’ll finish out our series on the 2015 Baldwin Cup Sailors, where we seek to find out more than their Collegiate All-American stats, looking for what lurks beneath their steely racing exteriors…

All former collate sailors the Bulldogs of Yale Corinthian Yacht Club always bring a pugnacious spirit to the Baldwin Cup.

2015 Meet Team Yale

Skipper Phil “The Whitewhale”

Where are you from originally? CA

What did you learn to sail in? Luders 16s & Herrschoff 12s

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Hmm, is this something I’ve been missing all these years???

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Sail with a significant other? The only way to sail the high (or low) seas, We just have to work out who the “ultimate decision maker” is

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Favorite: when everyone on the team comes together and trusts each other. In my experience earning this mutual trust is also the toughest part.

How have you trained for this regatta? Primarily Harbor 20 fleet races. On one occasion, a 4v4 scrimmage v. St.FYC, city front!

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? That point in the afternoon on Sunday when the breeze picks up and the best teams are fighting it out in beautiful Newport westerly conditions.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? In 4v4, you can’t sleep on anybody, especially with such a talented field. For myself, I am worried about managing all the feasting, drinking, sun exposure, and partying the Baldwin provides so that I sail at a high level for three days!

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Realistically, we are probably a longshot. We are going to take it a race at a time and see what happens!

Crew Whitney “The Lil Whitter”

Where are you from originally? Newport Beach

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Coffee, and the waffle on Sunday

Sail with a significant other? The only way to sail the high (or low) seas

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Counting and adding

How have you trained for this regatta? Listening to Phil’s monologue’s about combos

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Still working on it

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Our son—he controls the sleep

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Sheer luck

Skipper Zach Brown

Zach Brown
Where are you from originally? San Francisco, CA

What did you learn to sail in? Grew up in San Diego, learned to sail in Sabots

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Hang out and have fun

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Sail with a significant other? Wife doesn’t sail, but she does win the parties

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing?
Favorite part of team racing is when I make a mistake/error and my teammates have my back. The team chemistry and team work is really fun.

Favorite part 2: Hanging out together after racing as a big group bonded by shared experiences on the water.

Favorite part 3: Your team race team can easily field one side of the flip cup table!

How have you trained for this regatta? Practicing week before in J22s in San Francisco as a full team

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Looking forward to Mai Tais, the announcing during the sailing, and an open harbor cleared of all the mooring balls.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? All the teams are tough, looks like a competitive year. The local Newport teams have major talent and plenty of Harbor 20 experience. You can never count out NYYC or Larchmont.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? We will figure out a method to the 4 v 4 madness, hopefully we figure it out in time for the knock out series

Crew George Malcomsen

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? On the water debrief

How have you trained for this regatta? Cookies, soda, long hours at work…

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Sunbrellas on the change dock

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Harbor ferries

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? No problem.

What did you learn to sail in? Never learned to sail 🙁

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Wondering if the duct tape on the gloves will hold for another day.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
Because the man can dance:

Sail with a significant other? Families that sail together, fail together

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Both: It ain’t over till it’s over.

How have you trained for this regatta? Bough plane ticket.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Any of the moments that included 25¢ beers.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? A gentleman never tells.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Why not?

Crew Heather “Heath Bar” May

Heather-May
Where are you from originally? Newport Beach, CA

What did you learn to sail in? I learned to sail in Lido 14s and FJs

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? It’s pretty simple, as long as I get sleep and a cup of coffee I am good to go! Though a locker room dance party in college never hurt.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
I am unsure if this would be a widely-supported pump up song for my whole team, but one of my personal faves:

(even though I hate sailing in the rain…)

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? My favorite part of Team Racing is how every race can bring high-intensity. Even when races seem straight forward from the start and for the majority of the course, anything can happen in those last few stretches to the finish line!

How have you trained for this regatta? Because the nation’s capital is unfortunately situated on the opposite (and inferior) coast, I haven’t had any time to practice with my team! But this doesn’t make me worry about our team’s dominating performance this weekend!

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? I am most looking forward to sailing back in my hometown with fellow Yale sailors, and having my parents and family around to watch!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Although I will always be a YCYC Yale Bulldog, my heart also lies with NHYC. So though I feel conflicted, NHYC will be quick on the water and this weekend I want to see Yale come out on top!
