Open up that Golden Gate St. Francis!

Continuing down the West Coast with our on-going series on the 2015 Baldwin Cup Sailors, we’re seeking out more than their Collegiate All-American stats, finding out what lurks beneath their steely racing exteriors…

Now on to St. Francis Yacht Club, the beautiful club looking out on St. Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.

What did you learn to sail in? Sabot

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? We are always the last out to the race course.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Sail with a significant other? No need, she already knows how useless I am.

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Is this a team race?

How have you trained for this regatta? My whole life

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Getting flagged for not sitting on the cushions.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? I am not sure. What’s Pickney weight these days?

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Were kinda big deals.

Crew Melissa Purdy Feagin

Sail with a significant other? Cruising

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? I prefer silence.

Skipper Harrison “DJ Jazzy Jew” or “The Goober” Turner

Harrison-Turner-2015

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Los Angeles, CA and USC

What did you learn to sail in? I really got started on my grandfathers Islander 30 “Andiamo” up in the SF Bay but the first boat I sailed by myself was a U.S. Sabot (the centerboard one).

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Bath, a bottle, into PJs and a few books… Maybe that is for my son and not me so much…

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
You know when I am down to just my socks it’s time for business that’s why they call them business socks…

Sail with a significant other? I plead the FIFTH!

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? The camaraderie between the sailors. You can be locked in a heated race and then 10 minutes later laugh about it over a 25¢ beer.

How have you trained for this regatta? Chasing around a 10 month old is pretty much all I have time for these days. Although I have been exercising my vocal cords for the lip syncing.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Missing the year that it hailed on the regatta. Ha!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? The ice luge if there is one this year. Royal Thames and their domination of the lip-syncing.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Win or lose, we still booze.

Crew Cindy Turner

Cindy-Turner

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? San Francisco area currently, Rochester NY originally and Dartmouth

What did you learn to sail in? Laser radial, 420, parents’ Sabre

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Sleep in to 7:30a will be a good start! And coffee, lots of coffee.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
Definitely not the Trojan fight song (although someone at the back of the boat might think that!)

Sail with a significant other? The only way to sail the high (or low) seas, I don’t let Harrison have fun without me

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? When I have an opportunity to furl the jib mid race

How have you trained for this regatta? I get up at 5am every morning and read “Where is the baby’s belly button?”, and then I stack cups into a tower and watch a 10-month old knock it over. Rinse and repeat. I think about team race tactics the whole time.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Seattle’s joke about the Gold vs Silver medals back in 2010

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Ourselves

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? We love this event!

Skipper Jackson “Prideless” Benvenutti

Jackson Benvenutti

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Bay St. Louis, MS and College of Charleston, go Cougars!

What did you learn to sail in? Optimists and the wonderful (not so) Flying Scot!

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? That’s classified.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Sail with a significant other? Depends, I’d like to think of Lezin as a significant other but I’m not sure he’d reciprocate the feeling.

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Hardest part? Not running into other boats/ things but unfortunately I’ve been pretty good at that lately (but not as good as Dugdale).

How have you trained for this regatta? We tried, but Dugdale tried to rip down his rig in the very first drill. Way to go Dugdale.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Too many good ones to single out any one specific event!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? I’d lake to take this opportunity to thank all of the great umpires that help make this event happen!

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? 3rd time’s the charm, right?

Crew Ben “PB” Lezin

Ben-Lezin

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Santa Cruz and St. Mary’s

What did you learn to sail in? El Toro

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. Sailing in the harbor, it is most important to feel the wind on your face.

Sail with a significant other? Significant other, who needs one of those?

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Counting

How have you trained for this regatta? 24/7 IV drip of Mai Thais

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Last year.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Probably the teams that are in front of us and behind us.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Presumptuous responses to questions like this one are usually the beginning of the end for talented teams. But winning would be chill.

Crew Chris “Trapezzo”, “Big T” or “Jazz Hands” Trezzo

Chris-Trezzo-

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? San Francisco and UC Irvine

What did you learn to sail in? El Toros, FJs and 420s

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Burn a sail as a sacrifice to the wind gods.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Counting.

How have you trained for this regatta? One day at a time.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? 25¢ beers and color commentary from the announcers.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Everyone! The teams are all completely stacked!
