Larchmont is back!

Between the twelve teams there are 96 sailors competing in this year’s Baldwin Cup Team Race at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. They are an illustrious and competitive group including numerous Collegiate All-Americans, who have sailed all over the U.S. and beyond. Every year we pull each of them aside in an attempt to get to know them better, and to find out what lurks beneath their steely racing exteriors.

2015 Meet Team Larchmont

In 2013 the sailors from Larchmont won the Baldwin Cup Team Race. then in 2014 they didn’t return to the West coast to defend their title. But they’re back now, with 7 of the 8 sailors that were triumphant two years ago. Let’s find out what their game plan is to retake the Cup:

Anything really loud

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Winning

How have you trained for this regatta? A 1 hour practice that we broke our boats. Be afraid!

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Chicken wings after racing

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Always ourselves. 25 cent beers usually take us out

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? because the rest of the teams come down a severe illness.

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Favorite: getting to see friends from across the country and the regatta party…

How have you trained for this regatta? LYC has a lovely Sunday brunch.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? The 25¢ beers

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because of our rigorous winter sailing practice schedule.

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Late night Duffy cruise

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Fitting all of the 4v4 combos on my hand

How have you trained for this regatta? We train for the Baldwin every year by talking about how smart it would be to practice.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Getting out of our own way

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? We will win, otherwise we should have laid on the beach all day

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Slap Cardwell in the face three times and take three deep breaths.

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Favorite part is getting a teammate out of the deep 6 and then reminding them for days

How have you trained for this regatta? Most of the team went to Vegas a couple weeks ago to bond.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Doused with champagne by Baxter after a joyous victory

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Newport Harbor. They are awesome. No way they can lose. But if they do, perhaps the rules will change again?

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? There is no argument to be made here. We’ve all prioritized weddings and kids in the past year.

What did you learn to sail in? A 10 foot 1970s Boston Whaler with a sunfish rig.

What is your usual pre-regatta ritual? Harbor cruise in a Duffy boat!

What’s your boat’s theme or fight song?
I believe i’m crewing for Clay, so I guess it’s his favorite song:

Sail with a significant other? Families that sail together, fail together

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Again, note that I’m sailing with Clay. I’m going to go with “hardest” and “rigging.”

How have you trained for this regatta? I keep trying to schedule team practice, but the rest of the team doesn’t seem interested! They have this Allen Iverson attitude like they sail all the time so don’t need to practice—we’ll see how that goes for them.

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? Arriving in sunny Newport Harbor from cold New York.

How have you trained for this regatta? Sailed for 30 min last weekend before we broke 3 of 4 boats

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Home team always very tough!

Hardest or favorite part of Team Racing? Hard keeping track of where Team LYC is on and off the water

How have you trained for this regatta? One 2-hour “practice” with the partial team and one of our crew puking over the side of their boat. Go LYC!

Favorite Baldwin Cup Moment? The amazing regatta food and .25 beer
