Lightning Strike! Meet NHYC Team Lightning

NHYC always has a strong showing at Baldwin Cup, but the home team thinks this could be their year. Let’s try and gain some insight on the first batch of sailors representing Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Deermounter

What is your pre-regatta ritual? I answered last year and got in trouble

What is your sailing background? Grew up sailing on Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey, sailed Lasers all over North America in high school. Sailed for Tufts for 4 years in college and moved to Newport Beach after school. Current weekend warrior.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Counting drinks is for high school kids.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Everyone. Can’t narrow it down to just one team since the field is so deep this year.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Underdogs are doing well this spring. Take a look at Witichta State and Florida Gulf Coast.

What are your sailing nickname(s)? NONE, possibly 20knot Bill, as I whine until its 20

What is your sailing background? Sailmaker, J Boat dealer

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Too many, would pay 25 cents more for a good beer

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Seawanaka

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because its our destiny

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?

Casey HoganWhere are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Newport Beach and Dartmouth College

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Good night sleep

What is your sailing background? I grew up sailing sabots at NHYC. Then I moved into FJs, Lasers, and 420s. I sailed for Newport Harbor High School and Dartmouth College. I started team racing in high school and continued in college. After college, I have sailed in a variety of different regattas including match racing and the Transpac.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? 6

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? My brother Scott is sailing for New York YC. There is always a good family rivalry.

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Mean mug the competition

What is your sailing background? Lasers, high school and college, small keelboats, some bigger keelboats more recently.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? 0 during, hot mess after racing

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? NHYC Thunder cause they’re wicked nasty fast.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? The prophecy demands it. And a lot of practice and hard work beating up NHYC Thunder.

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Gordo

What is your pre-regatta ritual? No [censored] for a week before the regatta

What is your sailing background? Sailing since childhood; small boats as a teen then ocean racing. Many Mexican races, Transpacs. S.O.R.C., etc. and most California based larger boat regattas over the years. Recently sailing Harbor 20 and team racing. Participated in Morgan Cup, Soiland Cup and have competed in all Baldwin Cups to date.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? 0, straight to Vodka. My middle daugher, however, will more than make up for me.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? NHYC Thunder because they are actually pretty good in spite of themselves.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because we are good and team Thunder will self destruct at some point in the regatta 🙂

Justin Law

Justin LawWhere are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Newport Beach, CA and St. Mary’s College of Maryland

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Lawman

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Coffee

What is your sailing background? Grew up sailing in Newport Beach, CA. Attended Newport Harbor High School and sailed varisty all 4 years. Sailed I-420’s and 470’s internationally for a combined 8 years. 4 time All-American at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? 25. Duh.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Probably the other NHYC team. We’ve trained together and both teams have sailed the Harbor 20 quite a bit. Not alot of secrets out there, just a matter of execution.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because were Thunder Baby. [Editor’s note: Justin seems a bit confused about his team’s moniker, at least he picked a popular song, since this teammate Peter picked it also.]

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Wind Dance

What is your sailing background? I grew up sailing Sabots, Lasers, CFJs and 420s in NHYC’s Junior Sailing Program then for Corona del Mar HS and Stanford University. Today I enjoy sailing on the family J44, Patriot, and in the Harbor 20 fleet!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Phil Stemler. Brother. Duh.

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Leach of sail

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Get a good night sleep the night before.

What is your sailing background? Grew up sailing on Nantucket Sound at Stone Horse Yacht Club in Harwichport, Mass. Sailed dinghys in junior sailing and high school. Then moved onto college sailing at Tufts. Coached at NHYC summer of 2005/2006 and relocated from Boston to Newport Beach after graduating college.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? NHYC Thunder – just a grudge match for bragging rights

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Take it one race at a time and won’t psych ourselves out.
