God Save the Queen: Meet Team Royal Thames

This will be Royal Thames Yacht Club’s third showing at Baldwin Cup. After last year’s play-offs drama the boys from across the pond are sure to make a solid run at the Cup. Let’s see what the limey blokes have to say for themselves:

Guy Brearey

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Cambridge and Southampton University

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Beerey

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Beer with the chaps

What is your sailing background? International Cadets, 29ers, University Sailng, lots of Yachting, Match racing and Team Racing. BA cup 2010 & 2012. Currently Living and sailing in Hong Kong

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Enough to stay hydrated

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Ian Dosbon – purveyor of strong trousers

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Having been thrashed in last year’s final we’re hoping to go one better!

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?

Ian Dobson

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Manchester and sailed at the University of Southampton

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Lord of the North

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Taking the event media girls out for drinks.

What is your sailing background? Originally from a deep coal mine in northern England. Raced 420s internationally. Campaigned a 470 for London 2012 as part of the GBR Olympic Development Squad before realising that Transatlantic ‘weekending’ provides both top level competition and extreme fun on an unprecedented scale! I am a founding member of the Southampton Male Voice Choir: An elite group of vocal enthusiast, first brought together under the prestigious banner of Wessex Sailing Club. Having out grown this community the founding members formed the now infamous Southampton Male Voice Choir, which has since grown to rival even the most successful of nautical choral associations. The Choir hold countless Sailing World and National Championships between which are a direct result of the primary function of the group which is ‘Extendentque Musica Undas’ (Spread music across the waves).

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? 1 for every spin I get!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? I don’t think it is at all possible for anyone to have more fun than us. Certainly not without imediate arrest anyway. Some of the guys from NHYC are pretty fun, so I think if we all came down with severe illness, possibly loosing drinking limbs and singing voices, they might be considered competition for redefining the boundaries of ‘fun’.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? “Losers always whine about ‘their best’. Winners go home with the prom queen.

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?

James Boyce

James BoyceWhere are you from originally? London

What are your sailing nickname(s)? Ermmmmmm GUYS

What is your pre-regatta ritual? I take a pee before every race

What is your sailing background? Started in Optimists before moving into Lasers competing in the Laser Europeans and getting top 10 results in a couple of ISAF grade two events.

More recently I’ve been ranked among the top two in the RS200 fleet in the UK and came 4th at the last team racing worlds in Ireland.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? I’m carbo loading for the London Marathon so probably twice as many as our biggest competitors

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? On or off the water? On the water it’s usually Seawanhaka but we frequently find we are unmatched when it comes to sheer F.U.N off the water.

You’ll have to wait and see.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Because we’ll drink the most 25 cent beers. Is that how you win?

What is your pre-regatta ritual? None other than trying to arrive on time

What is your sailing background? Enterprise dinghy. 30+ years offshore racing in everything from 8m to 30m yachts. Etchells and Darings in the Solent. Team racing for RTYC for 25 years.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Not too many, I prefer other drinks!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? I have not done this event before. Those who have tell me they are all big competition!

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Probably because I will be the oldest person racing!

If your boat had a theme song, what would it be?
Don’t do theme songs!

What is your pre-regatta ritual? A Flat white!

What is your sailing background? Three years with the Thames, Team boat racing and offshore.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Many follwed by even more Mai Tais!

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Almost certainly!

Thomas Brennan

Thomas BrennanWhere are you from originally? UK

What is your sailing background? Offshore racing campaigns RORC, EAORA and JOG sailing (racing from UK to Netherlands, Belgium, France and Portugal). Numerous Cowes, Burnham and Ramsgate week regattas. I have also completed NYYC race week, Les Voiles de St Tropez, Antigua race weeks and Rolex Middle Sea and Fastnet races. I have completed a 1200 mile delivery of Swan 57 from Spain (Barcelona) to Greece (Corfu) and an Atlantic crossing from Boston to Gibraltar in a J-42 as watch leader.

Team Racing: Have been team racing for the last twelve years taking part in regattas across Europe and the North America – in particular, BVI Invitational, Jackson, Soiland and Baldwin Cups. I have been on the winning team for the Cumberland Cup and the George Nichols Trophy. 2012 Eurosaf Silver medal winner. Previous Captain of Racing for Royal Thames YC.

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? The sailing quality of all the teams is excellent – they will all be challenging.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Take each race one at a time…and you never know.

Where are you from originally and where did you sail in college? Engerland and sailed for Cambridge University

What is your pre-regatta ritual? Jagerbomb

What is your sailing background? Int 420s. International 14s, Fireflies, Wessex Exempt.

How many 25¢ beers will you drink during the Cup? Wow, i did not know they were 25cents. Thats about 3p. Lots..!

Who do you think is your biggest competition? Why? Ian Dobson. Fantastic Sailor, Marvelous Cricketer and World Class “Boozer”. Luckily he is on my team.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? Never before has such a cacophony of baritones been brought together to produce a world class sailing team.

What is your sailing background? Itchenor Sailing Club form early childhood, Cowes a few times, UKSA Youth Training Academies, in the last few years mainly XOD racing in Chichester Harbour and J80 events with RTYC.

Why will your team win this year’s Baldwin Cup? I am not as presumptuous as this question suggests and I have a high degree of respect for my opponents. We need to be in top condition. If thy fainteth on the day of adversity, thy strength is small.
